SUMMARY

Water Projects

The two wells for Naironde and Ereteti communities will be completed in the first quarter of 2008. Five more wells remain on our 10-well target that will ensure sufficient and reliable water source for the Maasai.  When the funds become available, the drilling of wells will be scheduled. Depending on the depth to reach potable water, costs are estimated to be between $30,000 and $40,000. The average depth is 500 ft.

Education

SIMOO continues to support education for primary, high school and college students. Girls are particularly vulnerable due to education considered to be a low priority for them by their families. The cost for education per year is:

·      Primary --- $ 150

·      High School --- $ 700

·      College/University --- $ 3,000

Food Security Program

SIMOO will continue food security projects, especially establishing crops that will thrive in dry land areas.

Advocacy

SIMOO will be represented at the Seventh Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues to be held at New York City, USA on  April 21 to May 2, 2008. We will make a presentation on “The Impact of Climate Change on Indigenous Peoples Cultures and Livelihoods.”

Cultural Exchange Programs

During the months of April and May, 2008 SIMOO will send Maasai representatives to exchange programs in Pennsylvania and Seattle. The Cultural Exchange Programs aims to raise money for education, water, and food security projects.
