Maasai Missions and Trips

 

 As SIMOO welcomed 2007, we also welcomed several organizations that traveled to Kenya to assist us in improving the Maasai’s quality of life.

 

New Canaan Visitors:  Feb 10, 2007 --  Construction and Cultural Projects

The trip was meant to assess the impact of food security projects supported by New Canaan Congregational Church. The Projects include fencing of farms, construction of Dams, Cultural show/Field Day among others.

 

Idaho University: Feb 15 to 20, 2007 – H2O Project

A team of 10 people tested water purification techniques using simple technology. The Olosho-Oibor Dam water would be of help to many people if the same could be purified to be clean enough for human consumption. The team also assessed the possibility of water rock catchments in the valley.

 

Jacqueline Weller:  April through July 2007 – Educational Researcher

Ms. Weller, a teacher by profession is from the United Kingdom.  Through interviews, she anticipates documenting Maasai spoken culture into literature form.  When published, the story books will be read by pupils in Maasai schools.

 

Kelly and Heather Loring from Pt. Pleasant Baptist Church: June 12 to 18, 2007 – Education and Cultural Visit

Kelly and Heather, two young women who volunteer with the Maasai Cultural Exchange Project, visited SIMOO and made follow-up visits to students sponsored through MCEP’s educational program.  They also attended the the Olosho-Oibor cultural show and various primary schools.

 

Grace Church Rooseville, Minnesota: June 24, 2007 – Education Sponsors

A team of 24 missionaries led by Bob Oerig visited Daystar University and SIMOO (Olosho-Oibor) village. This group has been partnering with SIMOO for some time and has sponsored several students to Daystar. Their visit coincided with the graduation of Samson Seketian and Faith Nemayian who have been the beneficiaries of this program. Julius Pulei and Grace Saruni have been selected as the next beneficiaries for educational support.

 

Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church Mission: June 25 to July  6, 2007 – Various

For the second time in 3 years, a team of 7 missionaries led, by Pastor John Walquist visited SIMOO.  Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church is a long time partner of SIMOO in various community development projects, particularly the teachers’ exchange program which has been ongoing since 2003.  This year they are involved with ‘True Love Waits’, a project that focuses on the youth. They visited five schools and attended the Ilng’arooj church dedication service. They also toured the Oloshoibor and Saikeri dispensaries, treated patients and donated medicine and equipment.
